Wisconsin's Whitetail Deer Trustee

Working to keep up Wisconsin's great hunting tradition - article by  Robert Hornacek FOX 11 News
Deer hunting is a billion-dollar-a-year industry in Wisconsin, so there is a lot at stake.

Hunters have expressed a lot of frustration in the last few years about the management of the deer herd. Now, the state has brought in an outsider to review things.

James Kroll is the new deer czar. He's officially called the Whitetail Deer Trustee. He's not your typical wildlife biologist. While he does have an academic background Kroll has spent much of his career communicating directly to hunters. He has his own TV show and has written hundreds of magazine articles.

Myths and Facts about Deer Hunting

Looking forward to the Deer Gun Season? While you wait for November 19th, here are some facts and myths about deer hunting for you to ponder, in an article by Dennis Anderson bellinghamherald.com
Across the nation, fall brings deer seasons. Here's a look at some assumptions, and mis-assumptions, deer hunters will take with them to their stands.

Myth - A well-placed heart and/or lung shot will drop a deer in its tracks, or shortly thereafter.

Fact - Sometimes yes, oftentimes no. And in cases when a deer shot in the heart or lungs doesn't drop, it can travel much farther than many hunters believe. Moreover, even seriously wounded deer can appear to tracking hunters to bleed more profusely than they actually are.

In one study using beef blood to simulate a bleeding deer, a pool of blood 12 inches across required only 6 ounces of blood to create.

Yet a loss of about 42 ounces of blood is required for a deer to bleed to death, according to Leonard Lee Rue III, author of the encyclopedic "The Deer of North America."

Hudson (WQOW) - When the DNR opened a new bear hunting zone in Hudson, one man took advantage of it, and may have come out with a Wisconsin record. Lon Feia shot a massive bear this week on his property just north of Hudson, but it wasn't easy.

Never did I have any idea that it would be anything like this," says Lon.

Lon Feia starting baiting for bears back in July, and spent the next two months catching him on camera. When the bear hunt season started, he went to work.

Sturgeon Season Starts September 3rd

A Wisconsin DNR Weekly article
"Excellent" fishing forecast for some waters

MADISON -- Anglers looking for a unique fishing opportunity don't have to look far. The 2011 hook and line season for sturgeon season opens Sept. 3 on about a dozen waters statewide and gives anglers the chance to reel in one of Wisconsin's largest and oldest fish.

The opening date is wrong in the Guide to Wisconsin Hook and Line Fishing Regulations 2011-2012, anglers should note, and Sept. 3 is the correct opening day.

Lake sturgeon can grow to more than 200 pounds and live more than 100 years. The 2011 season marks the fifth year that the minimum length for harvesting sturgeon is set at 60 inches, with a one-fish limit per season. The season runs through Sept. 30, 2011.

There is a catch and release season only on a stretch of the Menominee River downstream from the Hattie Street dam to Green Bay from Sept. 3-30.

Colorful Lures to Catch Bass

By Ray Sasser The Dallas Morning News from Madison.com
DALLAS -- Walk into any well-equipped tackle shop and you'll find fishing lures in every color of the rainbow. Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World, for instance, offers a line of soft plastic lures in 88 color combinations.

They had to make up names for these colors, because the rainbow doesn't have hues like roadkill camo, green pumpkin magic/pearl or ru-berry. Sounds like a palette dreamed up at Woodstock or a Grateful Dead concert.
As one saying goes, "Lures are made to catch the fishermen, not the fish. The fish don't have any money."

Spring Turkey Hunt numbers down

The prelimary numbers for this year's Spring Turkey Hunt are the lowest since 2002 according to this article By Paul A. Smith of the Journal Sentinel.
Hunters registered a preliminary total of 40,100 turkeys in the 2011 Wisconsin spring hunting season, lowest since 2002.

Although the number may increase slightly as reports are finalized, the season will likely show a drop in harvest of about 15% from 2010, said Sharon Fandel, assistant upland wildlife ecologist with the Department of Natural Resources.

Hunters registered 47,722 turkeys in the 2010 spring season and 52,581 in 2009. The record Wisconsin harvest is 52,880, set in 2008.

The 2011 preliminary total represents the third consecutive drop in harvest and only the fourth year-over-year decrease since the state offered a spring turkey hunt in 1983.

The last five-day period of the 2011 Wisconsin season ended May 22. The DNR made 225,729 permits available for the spring turkey hunt, similar to recent seasons.

Possible Wisconsin Gray Wolf Hunt

By Ron Seelly Wisconsin State Journal lacrossetribune.com
With the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on the verge of removing the gray wolf from endangered status, more calls are being heard in Wisconsin for a hunting season on the once rare animal.

"No question about it," Ed Harvey, chairman of the Wisconsin Conservation Congress, said of increasing pressure and support for a wolf hunting season.

Recommendations calling for more control of the state's wolves, now numbering more than 800, and a reduction in the population were approved in all 72 Wisconsin counties by members of the Conservation Congress earlier this spring. The organization advises the state Department of Natural Resources on outdoor sporting issues.

DNR ends "Earn A Buck"

from jsonline.com
Madison — Out with Earn-A-Buck regulations and the October gun hunt for antlerless deer.

In with unlimited antlerless permits in most of Wisconsin and a plea for hunters to harvest enough deer to bring the population closer to goal.

With a 7-0 vote at its Wednesday meeting, the Natural Resources Board approved a package of hunter-friendly regulations for the 2011 Wisconsin deer hunting seasons.

And in the process, it expressed its fervent wish to kill a deer hunting bill circulating in the Legislature.

The 2011 deer regulations package, proposed by the Department of Natural Resources in response to hunter complaints, includes less aggressive herd control tools than at any point in the last decade.
