Great Year for Fishing Tournaments

Article by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources
MADISON -- Eighty-thousand anglers competed in 595 fishing tournaments in Wisconsin in 2010 and reeled in $3.9 million in prize money, according to statistics from the state's fishing tournament permit system.

Larger fishing tournaments have had to get permits since the mid-1990s, but a 2004 law directed the Department of Natural Resources to update rules as tournaments increased. DNR worked with an advisory group to revise the rules to establish limits on the size and number of tournaments on some lakes and rivers to minimize concerns such as crowding, the spread of invasive species, and indirect fish mortality.

Donating Venison

Are you a lucky hunter who always fills his tags? Is there still meat left in the freezer from last year's hunt? You enjoy spending time in the woods, but don't like the taste of venison? Or maybe you just have a big heart.

Now in its 11th year, Wisconsin Venison Donation Program, along with Hunt for the Hungry and Target Hunger and more than 140 participating meat processors in 65 Wisconsin Counties, are ready to accept and distribute venison donated by hunters. Since 2000, thanks to the many generous hunters, over 3 million pounds of ground venison has been sent to various food banks to help those in need.

Here are some tips from the WI DNR if you'd like to participate:
•Field dress the deer and register it at a Wisconsin DNR registration station prior to donating the deer.
•Call First! Contact one of the participating processors before dropping the deer off to verify the processor has space to accept your deer.
•Deer legally harvested outside the CWD management zone are registered with a silver metal tag. These deer can be dropped off at a participating processor by Jan. 10, 2011.
•Deer harvested in the CWD management zone are registered with a red metal tag. Red-tagged deer can only be donated to a processor participating in the Target Hunger program. Donated red-tagged deer are tested for CWD and only deer that test negative will go out to pantries.
•Donate the entire deer to receive the processing for free. (Head and/or antlers may be removed for mounting.)
•When dropping a deer off at a processor, sign the simple log sheet indicating your desire to donate the deer and the donated deer will be processed and the venison will be distributed to charitable organizations to help feed Wisconsin’s needy.

Wisconsin Ruffed Grouse

Ruffed Grouse season is underway in both Zone A and Zone B in Wisconsin. Here's an article from Gun Dog Magazine of one man's adventure in finding his prey in Price County.
Gunning The Tickets - Ruffed grouse lessons in Wisconsin's North Woods By William C. Parlasca

It isn't funny anymore. I have been personally tutored by such noted authorities as Joe Arnette, Bill McClure and Charlie Waterman and, for all the good it has done me, I might as well have studied ruffed grouse gunning under The Wizard of Oz.

As yet undaunted, however, here I am headed for Wisconsin's Ruffed Grouse Capital of the Universe with wife Nancy, Jack the Brittany, and a wagonload of trout tackle and grouse hunting gear.

Lost Islands Returned to Wisconsin

By Jerome Christenson winonadailynews.com
Sometime in the past 50 years, Wisconsin lost a couple of islands.

Minnesota found them and, like a good neighbor, is giving them back.

The islands are in the Mississippi River just north of Lock and Dam 4, downstream from the marina in Alma, Wis. They are part of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The only people affected by the change in jurisdiction will be those who hunt and trap on the islands, said Mary Stefanski, Winona district manager for the refuge. Wisconsin hunting and trapping regulations will apply this fall, and Wisconsin hunting licenses and stamps will be needed.

New Deer Study by the DNR

From thenorthwestern.com by Ross Bielema

The state Department of Natural Resources wants to know if coyotes, wolves and other predators wreak havoc on Wisconsin's deer population and what affects survival rate of whitetail bucks.
Two major research projects spearheaded by the department and being discussed 7 p.m. Monday at Navarino Nature Center, Shiocton, will dissect those questions and help appease hunters who claim DNR counts are inaccurate.

Bowfishing in Wisconsin

By Patrick Durkin madison.com:
Geysers erupted around me like small depth charges as I rowed, probed and maneuvered through Lake Poygan's patchwork of cane beds in the shallows near Boom Bay.

All these watery explosions triggered by spawning carp could mean only one thing: My nephew must be near.

If it's dawn in early June and carp are wallowing in Poygan's shallows, that's where you look for Beau Christensen of Madison. We failed long ago to interest him in walleye fishing or deer hunting, but carp? He's been hounding the big uglies ever since his grandfather got him a used bowfishing rig about 10 years ago.

Score One for the WI DNR!

From the sheboyganpress.com Letters to the Editor
The number of people who violate Wisconsin's hunting and fishing rules is a small number. But every now and then, a significant case comes to light.
Last week, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel outdoors writers Paul A. Smith reported on the case of 13 men from the Milwaukee area allegedly taking more than 2,200 fish over their allowable possession limit, mainly crappies and bluegills, on the Chippewa Flowage in northern Wisconsin in late May. Gray Wolves In Wisconsin

As the wolf population continues to grow, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources said Tuesday it is once again asking federal authorities to remove the gray wolf from a list of federal endangered species.
The agency said it has asked the U.S. Department of Interior for permission to reclassify the status of the wolf so state authorities would have more flexibility to
control a burgeoning wolf population.

Hunting in State Parks

From the Sauk Prairie Eagle: Voters in Sauk County and elsewhere overwhelmingly supported a proposal to allow trapping and hunting in state parks during last week's statewide fish and wildlife rule hearings.

The resolution, which won support in 17 of the 18 counties it was introduced in, still would have to go through a series of hoops before becoming law.

"In the counties it passed in, it passed by quite a large margin," said Kari Lee-Zimmermann of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, who tallied results from the annual rule hearings that took place in all 72 Wisconsin counties.

-------
The Wisconsin DNR has now scheduled 40 Deer Management meetings next month thoughout the state.

MADISON – Department of Natural Resources Secretary Matt Frank announced a major new initiative to improve the DNR’s population estimates for white-tailed deer. The information was presented today by wildlife management staff at a meeting of the Natural Resources Board.
"We have heard from hunters who are frustrated and skeptical about the DNR’s deer population estimates. In response to hunter and legislative concerns, we are taking action to improve the model for the deer population estimate, perform additional research, involve hunters more extensively in our efforts, and improve communication with the public on survey results and research findings. Many of these actions have been advocated by hunting organizations,” Frank said. Full Press Release
