Night Deer Hunt Ban Remains

The Chippewa Tribes are seeking to establish Night Deer Hunting on tribal lands, but the State is fighting this, citing safety concerns. See this article from the Pioneer Press
MADISON, Wis. -- State attorneys tried to persuade a federal appellate court Wednesday to reject a request from Wisconsin's Chippewa bands to reopen a long-settled case barring tribal hunters from hunting deer at night.

The state Department of Natural Resources has long banned night deer hunts out of safety concerns. The Chippewa, though, have pushed for years for a tribal night deer hunt in the ceded territory, a gigantic swath of northern Wisconsin the bands handed over to the federal government in the 19th century.

Record number of Bald Eagle Nests in Wisconsin

According to the Wisconsin DNR, there are bald eagle nests in nearly every County in Wisconsin, something thought to be nearly impossible just a few years ago.

Check out the eagle's nest photos and story on WQOW.com
RHINELANDER (Press Release) – State biologists take to the skies again this month to count how many young bald eagles hatched this spring, buoyed by April aerial survey results suggesting a record number of occupied nests in a record number of counties.

"We're really close to having eagles nesting in all Wisconsin counties," says Jim Woodford, the Department of Natural Resources conservation biologist coordinating the survey this year. "We're well beyond what we would have thought possible in the state."

40 Years of Protecting Wildlife and Plants

2012 was the 40th Anniversary of the Wisconsin law protecting rare and endangered plants and wildlife. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is proud of its record of successes. Here is an article published by the DNR that showcases some of their efforts.
MADISON -- The 40th anniversary year of Wisconsin's law safeguarding rare wildlife and plants is winding down with the penultimate feature posted today on the Department of Natural Resources website highlighting successful comebacks and innovative approaches achieved under the law.

The new feature focuses on private landowners teaming up with DNR staff and other partners to restore habitat that will benefit the state’s at-risk species. The feature, like the 11 that have preceded it, uses videos, slide shows, and other media to help tell the story and encourage people to get involved.

Firewood Facts

With Camping Season in full swing in Wisconsin, here's a reminder about Wisconsin's Firewood regulations.

Most importantly, firewood cannot be brought to Wisconsin from another state. This could violate federal law and have fines up to $1000.

If you are camping at any state property, the wood must come from within 25 miles of that property, and it cannot come from a quaranteed area.

Many private campgrounds also have restrictions on firewood, so be sure to check in advance if you plan to bring firewood with you.

You can also purchase firewood from a Wisconsin Certified Dealer - this wood has been treated for pests and diseases and is allowed on state properties and most campgrounds.  Keep your receipt to show as proof when you head out.

Hunting Sandhill Cranes

There seems to be support for a Sandhill Crane hunting season in Wisconsin, but those opposed say there are already enough animals hunted here.  Article from the Green Bay Press Gazette
MADISON — Outdoor lovers overwhelmingly endorsed the idea of hunting sandhill cranes, according to a tally state wildlife officials released Wednesday.

The Wisconsin Conservation Congress asked everyone who attended its annual statewide spring hearings Monday whether they support a sandhill season. Attendees approved the idea by more than a 2-1 margin, according to a count the state Department of Natural Resources released Wednesday afternoon.

The vote promises to give conservative legislators more leverage as they advance legislation authorizing a hunt — and ratchet up an already bitter debate in a state that both prides itself on its hunting culture and serves as home to the International Crane Foundation, one of the world's premier crane conservation organizations.

Best Trophy Whitetail Deer in Wisconsin

Wisconsin ranks first in the nation for Trophy Deer hunting.  Story by weau.com
If you're looking to bag a trophy buck next fall, the DNR says you're living in the right state.

According to records kept by the Boone and Crockett Club, Wisconsin is the number one state to find a big buck. The club says the number of trophy bucks harvested has risen by 857% over the past 3 decades, and 383 record breaking bucks were harvested from 2006 to 2010.
The club says that's because Wisconsin has good deer range and more refuges, which allow bucks to grow older.

Bill for Crossbow Hunting

Hunters disagree on a new bill proposing crossbow hunting. Story from wpr.com
The Assembly Natural Resources Committee is considering a bill that changes guidelines for weapons that may be used to hunt certain animals.

The Wisconsin Bowhunters Association is backing the legislation which allows crossbows to be used during the gun-deer season, bear season and small game seasons. However the proposal would not change existing law that bars use of the weapon during the archery-deer season.

Wisconsin's Whitetail Deer Trustee

Working to keep up Wisconsin's great hunting tradition - article by  Robert Hornacek FOX 11 News
Deer hunting is a billion-dollar-a-year industry in Wisconsin, so there is a lot at stake.

Hunters have expressed a lot of frustration in the last few years about the management of the deer herd. Now, the state has brought in an outsider to review things.

James Kroll is the new deer czar. He's officially called the Whitetail Deer Trustee. He's not your typical wildlife biologist. While he does have an academic background Kroll has spent much of his career communicating directly to hunters. He has his own TV show and has written hundreds of magazine articles.

A Very Big Black Bear

A possibly record breaking Black Bear was taken in the new hunting zone near Hudson.  Story by Megan Wiebold wqow.com
Hudson (WQOW) - When the DNR opened a new bear hunting zone in Hudson, one man took advantage of it, and may have come out with a Wisconsin record. Lon Feia shot a massive bear this week on his property just north of Hudson, but it wasn't easy.

Never did I have any idea that it would be anything like this," says Lon.

Lon Feia starting baiting for bears back in July, and spent the next two months catching him on camera. When the bear hunt season started, he went to work.

Black Bear Hunting Season

September 7th is the beginning of Black Bear Hunting season in Wisconsin. The first week of the season will be for hunters with dogs only in zones A, B and D, and the season ends October 11th. 9005 permits have been issued, and the harvest quota is 5,235 bear, the same number as 2010.

If you'd like to get into next year's hunt, you'll need a Class A bear license. These are very popular and are awarded by a “preference point lottery system”. For information on how this works visit the Wisconsin DNR site Getting a Bear License.

Sturgeon Season Starts September 3rd

A Wisconsin DNR Weekly article
"Excellent" fishing forecast for some waters

MADISON -- Anglers looking for a unique fishing opportunity don't have to look far. The 2011 hook and line season for sturgeon season opens Sept. 3 on about a dozen waters statewide and gives anglers the chance to reel in one of Wisconsin's largest and oldest fish.

The opening date is wrong in the Guide to Wisconsin Hook and Line Fishing Regulations 2011-2012, anglers should note, and Sept. 3 is the correct opening day.

Lake sturgeon can grow to more than 200 pounds and live more than 100 years. The 2011 season marks the fifth year that the minimum length for harvesting sturgeon is set at 60 inches, with a one-fish limit per season. The season runs through Sept. 30, 2011.

There is a catch and release season only on a stretch of the Menominee River downstream from the Hattie Street dam to Green Bay from Sept. 3-30.

Colorful Lures to Catch Bass

By Ray Sasser The Dallas Morning News from Madison.com
DALLAS -- Walk into any well-equipped tackle shop and you'll find fishing lures in every color of the rainbow. Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World, for instance, offers a line of soft plastic lures in 88 color combinations.

They had to make up names for these colors, because the rainbow doesn't have hues like roadkill camo, green pumpkin magic/pearl or ru-berry. Sounds like a palette dreamed up at Woodstock or a Grateful Dead concert.
As one saying goes, "Lures are made to catch the fishermen, not the fish. The fish don't have any money."
