40 Years of Protecting Wildlife and Plants

2012 was the 40th Anniversary of the Wisconsin law protecting rare and endangered plants and wildlife. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is proud of its record of successes. Here is an article published by the DNR that showcases some of their efforts.
MADISON -- The 40th anniversary year of Wisconsin's law safeguarding rare wildlife and plants is winding down with the penultimate feature posted today on the Department of Natural Resources website highlighting successful comebacks and innovative approaches achieved under the law.

The new feature focuses on private landowners teaming up with DNR staff and other partners to restore habitat that will benefit the state’s at-risk species. The feature, like the 11 that have preceded it, uses videos, slide shows, and other media to help tell the story and encourage people to get involved.

Deer Harvest Up Over Last Year

Nearly 135,000 deer were harvested over opening weekend, which is up 24% over 2011, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Check out this article on the WDNR website with information about this years hunt and a breakdown by County of this years hunt.
MADISON – Though hunters define success in different ways, 134,772 deer were successfully harvested and registered in Wisconsin during the opening weekend of the nine-day deer season. The tally is based on preliminary call-in numbers collected from registration stations by Department of Natural Resources staff.

“Congratulations to all hunters who were able to harvest a deer opening weekend of the nine-day. Though getting a deer is often the ultimate goal of the hunt, it is the whole experience of getting out there with friends and family that keeps us coming back each year,” said DNR Sec. Cathy Stepp. “I hope those that weren’t able to get a deer during the season opener will get back out there and enjoy the rest of the days of the season.”

Grey Wolf Hunting Rules, Quotas Proposed

The Federal Government has delisted the Grey Wolf from the Endangered Species List for the Great Lakes Region. Now Wisconsin is preparing guidelines for future hunting seasons and has information sessions planned across the State.  Article from the Wisconsin DNR

MADISON -- Earlier this year the federal government delisted the gray wolf from the endangered species list for the Western Great Lakes Region. This spring, Act 169 was passed by the Wisconsin Legislature and signed by the governor, directing the Department of Natural Resources to develop a wolf hunting and trapping season rule, harvest management zones, harvest quotas, and hunter and trapper permit levels.

“The department is committed to conservation of wolves in Wisconsin. Long-term conservation includes managing this important wildlife population within our borders,” said DNR Secretary Cathy Stepp.

Best Trophy Whitetail Deer in Wisconsin

Wisconsin ranks first in the nation for Trophy Deer hunting.  Story by weau.com
If you're looking to bag a trophy buck next fall, the DNR says you're living in the right state.

According to records kept by the Boone and Crockett Club, Wisconsin is the number one state to find a big buck. The club says the number of trophy bucks harvested has risen by 857% over the past 3 decades, and 383 record breaking bucks were harvested from 2006 to 2010.
The club says that's because Wisconsin has good deer range and more refuges, which allow bucks to grow older.

New Hours for DNR

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says it's expanding counter service hours across the state.  Story from the WDNR website.
MADISON – The Department of Natural Resources is beginning to roll out expanded over-the-counter service hours at a number of service centers statewide. When complete later this winter, hours will be increased 40 percent statewide.

Hour changes will be phased in center by center as staff is fully trained and ready to help customers. Please check with the DNR’s Call Center at 1-888-WDNRINFo (1-888-936-7463) or service center pages of the DNR website to confirm when new hours for your local center will start.

“Excellent customer service is a top priority for DNR. Having many of our centers open only two or three days a week made it tough for our customers to know when to come in. These changes assure customers will be able to get help at predictable hours, five days a week,” said DNR Secretary Cathy Stepp. “By making some internal adjustments, we are able to improve our customer service, and make our knowledgeable, friendly staff more available to help you."

Wisconsin's Whitetail Deer Trustee

Working to keep up Wisconsin's great hunting tradition - article by  Robert Hornacek FOX 11 News
Deer hunting is a billion-dollar-a-year industry in Wisconsin, so there is a lot at stake.

Hunters have expressed a lot of frustration in the last few years about the management of the deer herd. Now, the state has brought in an outsider to review things.

James Kroll is the new deer czar. He's officially called the Whitetail Deer Trustee. He's not your typical wildlife biologist. While he does have an academic background Kroll has spent much of his career communicating directly to hunters. He has his own TV show and has written hundreds of magazine articles.

Sturgeon Season Starts September 3rd

A Wisconsin DNR Weekly article
"Excellent" fishing forecast for some waters

MADISON -- Anglers looking for a unique fishing opportunity don't have to look far. The 2011 hook and line season for sturgeon season opens Sept. 3 on about a dozen waters statewide and gives anglers the chance to reel in one of Wisconsin's largest and oldest fish.

The opening date is wrong in the Guide to Wisconsin Hook and Line Fishing Regulations 2011-2012, anglers should note, and Sept. 3 is the correct opening day.

Lake sturgeon can grow to more than 200 pounds and live more than 100 years. The 2011 season marks the fifth year that the minimum length for harvesting sturgeon is set at 60 inches, with a one-fish limit per season. The season runs through Sept. 30, 2011.

There is a catch and release season only on a stretch of the Menominee River downstream from the Hattie Street dam to Green Bay from Sept. 3-30.

Public Meetings for Inland Trout Fishing

From the Wisconsin DNR Weekly News
MADISON -- Trout anglers can attend one of more than 30 meetings across the state in late March and early April to give feedback on inland trout fishing now and express their hopes for the future.

The public meetings, part of Wisconsin's review of inland trout fishing, come as recent studies are showing increased brook and brown trout populations, more trout streams, and changes in angler attitudes and habits.

“As secretary I hope all people will take full advantage of this opportunity to help the department better manage this critical resource,” says Department of Natural Resources Secretary Cathy Stepp. “I am very interested in seeking your ideas on DNR program improvements that matter to the citizens of Wisconsin. We can't do this without your help.”
